Press Release
TAMPA, FL – June 6, 2026
Simple Higher Ed today released findings from a national survey examining how college and university students seek academic support and the growing role of AI in that process.
The survey revealed a consistent theme: students generally know where to find help, but often cannot access timely support when questions arise. More than 83% of respondents reported having course-related questions outside traditional working hours, while 85% said there are times when they need help but cannot get a response when they need it.
The impact extends beyond convenience. Seventy-eight percent of students said delays in receiving answers from an instructor or teaching assistant have caused them to feel stuck or fall behind. Seventy-nine percent agreed that waiting for responses slows their ability to stay engaged with coursework, and 74% reported that a lack of timely support has negatively affected their understanding of course material.
As a result, students are increasingly seeking answers outside the course environment. Nearly 89% of respondents said they rely on external tools, including search engines and AI platforms, because they cannot always get timely answers within their courses. Additionally, 88% said they currently use or intend to use AI tools for academic support or tutoring.
The question is no longer whether students are using AI. The question is where they’re getting answers and whether those answers align with the course.

The survey also found that 88% of students believe immediate, course-specific support would improve their learning experience, highlighting growing demand for support that is both timely and connected to the courses students are taking.
